What is Director Identification Number (DIN)?

DIN is an 8-digit unique identification number allotted to an individual who is appointed as a director of a company, upon making an application in form DIR-3 on the MCA portal.  As per the Companies Act 2013, every individual, who is the director of a company or who wants to be a director in a company needs to obtain a DIN number.

  • DIN has lifetime validity.
  • One director can have only one DIN
  • In case of a new company, an application for allotment of DIN shall be made only through SPICe eform at the time of its incorporation.

How to apply DIN?

New Company - Any person intending to become a director is required to apply for the allotment of DIN number only through SPICe eform at the time of incorporation.

Existing Company - Any person intending to become a director shall have to make an application in eForm DIR-3 for allotment of DIN.

Steps to apply for allotment of DIN number on MCA portal

Step 1: Go to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) website

Step 2: Navigate to "MCA Services" > "E-Filing" > "Company Forms Download".

Step 3: On the "Company Forms Download" page, find Form DIR-3 under the "DIN Forms" section and download it.

Step 4: After downloading the form, fill it with all the required details and attach a soft copy of the following documents:

  • Latest photograph
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of residence
  • Specimen signature duly verified

These documents have to be verified digitally by the director or Company Secretary or Manager, and CEO/ CFO of the company.

Step 6: Upon upload, make the payment of the prescribed fees of eForm DIR-3. 

Step 7: After successful payment,

  • Approved DIN shall be generated in case the details of the eForm have not been identified as a potential duplicate.
  • Provisional DIN shall be generated in case the details of the eform have been found as a potential duplicate.

A suitable informational message will be given to the applicant in this regard in the receipt.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Yes, the DIN application fee of Rs. 500/- is payable.

No, the particulars of the person with the provisional DIN number cannot be filled in the eforms and the person cannot sign as a director.

You can check the status of SRN under Track Payment Status on MCA website.

  • In case, the Payment Status of SRN is showing as “Payment confirmed. Transaction is being processed by System”. Please raise a Ticket for such concern/s on the MCA website under User Complaint & Grievances link.
  • In case payment is marked as “PAID”, please check if DIN is marked as approved.

PAN is mandatory for Indian nationals however the same is optional for foreign nationals.

  • Details of a valid passport should be filled in form DIR-3 and a certified copy of same should be attached with DIN application.
  • All supporting documents should be certified by the Indian Embassy or a notary in the home country of the applicant.
  • If a foreign director has a valid multiple-entry Indian visa or Person of Indian Origin card or Overseas Citizen of India card, then the attestation could also be done by Public Notary / Gazetted Officer in India.

The e-Form DIR-3 is required to be digitally signed by the Applicant and shall be verified digitally by the Company Secretary in full-time employment of the company or by the Managing Director or Director or CEO or CFO of an existing company in which the applicant is intended to be appointed as director.

The e-Form DIR-6 is required to be digitally signed by the Applicant and further certified by a Chartered Accountant or a Company Secretary or a Cost Accountant in whole-time practice or company secretary (member of ICSI)/Director of existing company in which applicant is proposed to be the director.

Yes, you will have to apply for a fresh DIN.
