E-way bill via SMS

Electronic Way Bill (E-Way Bill) is an electronic document generated on the GST portal evidencing the movement of goods. E-way bill needs to be issued in the following cases-

  • Movement of goods of consignment value exceeding Rs 50,000
  • Inter-State transfer of goods by principal to job-worker
  • Inter-State transfer of handicraft goods by a person exempted from obtaining registration

The e-way bill can be generated by any of the following methods:

  • Using Web mode
  • Using SMS mode
  • Using Android App
  • Bulk generation facility
  • Using Site-to-Site integration
  • Using GSP (Goods and Services Tax Suvidha Provider)

This article explains the conditions, SMS format, and steps that are required to generate an e-way bill through SMS.

SMS based functionalities in EWB system

SMS facility of EWB system is available mainly for taxpayers who may not connect to the internet or not having a large number of E-Way bill transactions. In this facility, users can perform activities related to the E-Way bill by sending a message to a specified number. EWB system provides the SMS option to perform the following actions-

  • E-Way bill generation
  • Update vehicle details
  • Update transporter details
  • Cancellation of e waybill

Conditions to generate e waybill via SMS mode

a) User mobile number must be registered on EWB portal for SMS facility;

b) GST number must be linked to the registered mobile number;

c) User has to send the message in a prescribed format to a designated number. SMS must have complete details in accurate format as incomplete/inaccurate SMS may result in the creation of the wrong E-Way bill.

Steps to register the mobile number for SMS options

Step 1: Visit the e-way bill portal and enter login credentials to proceed.

Step 2: Go to the “Registration” tab appearing in the main menu and click on the “SMS” option from the drop-down.

Step 3: Next, enter the registered mobile number which has been given for registration on the e-way bill website and click the “Send OTP” button.

Step 4: OTP will receive on the given mobile number. Enter the received OTP in the “OTP” field and click the “Verify OTP” button.

Step 5: Now, User IDs will be displayed on the screen. Select the User ID from the drop-down.

Step 6: Click the “Submit” button. Now, the user is authorized to create an e-way bill through SMS mode.

SMS format for registered businesses

To create a new e way bill via SMS mode, the registered taxpayer has to send a message in the following format -

EWBG / TranType / RecGSTIN/ DelPinCode / InvNo / InvDate / TotalValue / HSNCode / ApprDist / Vehicle

Instructions-

  • EWBG - E-way Bill Generation (Fixed word).
  • TranType - Transaction Type (Specific code prescribed for every type of transaction)
  • RecGSTIN - Recipient's GSTIN, or URP if the person is not registered
  • DelPinCode - PIN Code of the place of delivery
  • InvNo – Invoice / Bill number
  • InvDate - Invoice / Bill date
  • TotalValue - Total Invoice / Bill value in Rupees
  • HSN Code – HSN Code (Minimum 2 digits).
  • ApprDist – Approximate Distance in KMs (distance between supplier and receiver).
  • Vehicle - Vehicle number in which goods are being transported

SMS format for transporters

To create a new e way bill via SMS mode, the transporter has to send a message in the following format -

EWBT / TranType / SuppGSTIN / RecGSTIN / DelPinCode / InvNo / InvDate / TotalValue / HSNCode / ApprDist / Vehicle

Instructions-

  • EWBT - E-way Bill Generation for Transporters (Fixed word).
  • TranType - Transaction Type (Specific code prescribed for every type of transaction)
  • SuppGSTIN - Supplier's GSTIN, or URP if the person is not registered
  • RecGSTIN - Recipient's GSTIN, or URP if the person is not registered
  • DelPinCode - PIN Code of the place of delivery
  • InvNo – Invoice / Bill number
  • InvDate - Invoice / Bill date
  • TotalValue - Total Invoice / Bill value in Rupees
  • HSN Code – HSN Code (Minimum 2 digits).
